How to Prepare Before Waxing

Waxing is a popular method to achieve silky-smooth, hair-free skin that lasts much longer than shaving. However, preparation plays a crucial role in ensuring a less painful experience and the best possible results. If you’re planning your next waxing session, here are some important steps to follow before your appointment.

1. Let Your Hair Grow to the Right Length

For waxing to work effectively, your hair needs to be long enough for the wax to grip. Ideally, it should be around a quarter of an inch long (about the size of a grain of rice). If your hair is too short, the wax may not adhere properly, leaving behind patches. On the other hand, if the hair is too long, it can cause unnecessary pulling and discomfort during removal. If you’re unsure, resist the temptation to trim—your esthetician can always take care of it for you.

2. Exfoliate Gently

Exfoliating your skin a day before your waxing appointment is one of the best ways to prepare. By using a mild scrub, exfoliating glove, or a gentle chemical exfoliant, you remove dead skin cells that can trap hair and cause ingrown hairs after waxing. Remember not to over-exfoliate or use harsh scrubs, as irritated skin can be extra sensitive to the waxing process. A light exfoliation 24 hours prior is more than enough.

3. Keep Skin Clean and Dry

On the day of your appointment, it’s important to shower and clean your skin thoroughly. Make sure your skin is free of lotions, body oils, deodorant, or creams, as these can prevent the wax from sticking to the hair. Clean and dry skin ensures the wax has the best grip, making the removal process quicker and more effective. A quick rinse with warm water before your session can also help open pores and make hair removal easier.

4. Avoid Sun Exposure and Tanning

Waxing on sunburned or freshly tanned skin is a recipe for discomfort and irritation. The skin becomes extra sensitive after sun exposure or tanning, which can increase the risk of redness, peeling, or even small abrasions during waxing. To avoid this, stay out of direct sunlight and avoid tanning beds at least 24–48 hours before your appointment. Protecting your skin beforehand ensures it remains healthy and less reactive during waxing.

5. Choose Comfortable Clothing

What you wear on the day of your appointment can make a big difference in how comfortable you feel afterward. Opt for loose, breathable fabrics like cotton that won’t rub against freshly waxed skin. Tight clothing can trap heat, cause friction, and increase irritation, especially in sensitive areas like the bikini line or underarms. A relaxed outfit will help your skin recover faster and keep you feeling at ease post-wax.

6. Manage Sensitivity

Waxing involves pulling hair directly from the root, which can be uncomfortable, especially if it’s your first time. To help minimize pain, consider taking an over-the-counter pain reliever about 30 minutes before your session (after checking with your doctor). Additionally, avoid caffeine before your appointment, as it can make your skin more sensitive. Try not to book your session right before or during your menstrual cycle, since hormonal changes during this time heighten sensitivity.

7. Stay Hydrated and Relaxed

Hydration plays a big role in how your skin reacts to waxing. Drinking enough water in the days leading up to your appointment keeps your skin soft and healthy, allowing hair to be removed more easily. It’s also important to relax. When you’re tense, the process may feel more uncomfortable. Take deep breaths, trust your esthetician, and remember that the discomfort only lasts for a few seconds per strip.

Final Tip: By following these simple yet effective preparation steps, you’ll make your waxing session smoother, less painful, and more rewarding. Good preparation means not only better results but also healthier skin and a longer-lasting silky finish.

IMPORTANT AFTER WAXING CARE

Here are some incredible tips for those who wax on a regular basis or are new to the process.

You’ll need to keep any part of your body you wax clean and dry for the first 48 hours after waxing, and also avoid anything that could irritate your delicate skin. The list includes exfoliating, strong sunlight, saunas, synthetic clothes, and steamy, hot baths (another reason to make the most of your pre-wax one).

1. Stay out of the sun.

The first 48 hours after waxing, your already delicate skin down there is even more vulnerable. So while you may be dying to throw on your bikini the second you leave the salon, keep in mind that sensitive skin is more susceptible to U.V. rays. This can lead to permanent damage.

2. Avoid swimming.

This kind of goes hand in hand with the above, but it goes for indoor pools too—and especially large bodies of water (like an ocean, lake, or river) that could contain bacteria. “Avoid public water like swimming pools for a few days.”

Psssstttt….Be careful not to over exfoliate.

Waxing removes the top most layer of dead skin, along with the hair, so any kind of additional scrubbing can lead to skin damage. However, after the first few days, it’s important to remove dead skin cells with a light scrub or exfoliating serum to prevent ingrown hairs.
Immediately after waxing (first 24–48 hours):
•🚫 Avoid heat & friction – No hot showers, saunas, steam rooms, or workouts that make you sweat.
•🚫 No tanning or direct sun exposure – Skin is more prone to irritation and hyperpigmentation.
•🚫 Avoid makeup, scented lotions, or harsh products – They can clog pores or cause irritation.
•✅ Apply a soothing product – Aloe vera gel, witch hazel, or a fragrance-free calming lotion helps reduce redness and irritation.
•✅ Wear loose clothing – Prevents friction and ingrown hairs.
